About Us
History
The Indonesian Wild Bird Conservation Association (BirdLife Indonesia Association) or Indonesian Bird was founded on July 15 2002, with the aim of preserving wild birds in Indonesia and their habitats. Burung Indonesia is an Indonesian legal entity organization. In the BirdLife International Global Partnership, Indonesian Birds have Partner status. BirdLife International’s Global Partnership includes 119 organizations worldwide. Burung Indonesia is the only BirdLife International Partner in Indonesia.
In the first five years, Indonesian Bird conservation actions were carried out in Sumba, Flores, Tanimbar, Halmahera and Sangihe-Talaud. One important note in this period was the birth of Hutan Harapan, an innovative program welcoming the publication of breakthrough regulations from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, namely ecosystem restoration in production forests. Hutan Harapan aims to save the remaining lowland forests of Sumatra.
In the following period, Indonesian Bird conservation actions expanded to new areas, including Gorontalo. The Wallacea Partnership Program begins. This program, which was implemented with 102 civil society organizations in Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara and the Maluku Islands, has expanded the geographical scope of Indonesian bird conservation action. Locations for conservation actions in this program are not limited to terrestrial ecosystems, but also coastal and marine ecosystems as well as freshwater ecosystems.
Approaching the second decade since its founding, Burung Indonesia has begun to build conservation entrepreneurship which aims to help encourage economic development in locations important for biodiversity and support the organization’s long-term funding sustainability. The Java Program began with activities to preserve the species and habitat of songbirds in western Java. Identification of Important Areas for Papuan Birds and Biodiversity has also begun. Conservation actions in coastal and marine ecosystems have developed. In this period, the era of Indonesian Bird membership began, precisely on July 15 2017.
Entering the second decade, conservation action in coastal and marine ecosystems has developed considerably, including covering the waters of South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Banggai Islands and Tomini Bay. Together with the regional government and local communities, Burung Indonesia also continues to develop various approaches to sustainable natural resource management in terrestrial ecosystem locations. One of the important achievements to note is the success of the Mbeliling Landscape Multipurpose Business Cooperative in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara in obtaining a Timber Legality Verification System certificate.
Membership and public participation activities, including those carried out periodically since 2017, include the Asian Waterbird Census, Raptor Migratory Watch, Celebrating Bird Diversity in Indonesia, Nature Trip, and Tea Time with Indonesian Birds.
On July 15 2021, the first Member Meeting was held since the start of the membership era. One of the decisions taken at this meeting was the approval of the composition of the Association Management Board led by Nuning S. Barwa and the Association Supervisory Board chaired by DR. R. Boedi Mranata. The Indonesian Bird Association office is currently led by Dian Agista as Executive Director.
